Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
